THE BASILICA OF ST. JOHN LATERAN THE CATHEDRAL OF ROME

Built by Costantino in 314 A.D. after his victory at the Battle of Milvian Bridge against Massenzio, it is the oldest church in the West.

The majestic Baroque nave is considered one of Borromini's Masterpieces, restored in the 17th century on the commission of Pope Innocenzo III.
The very precious gold coffered ceiling was designed by Michelangelo and later made by Daniele da Volterra on commission from Popes Pio IV and Pio V.

The Cosmatesque flooring is decorated with polychrome marble, typical of medieval Roman art of the 12th century.
